What is homelessness and how many people are homeless?

Homelessness is about more than rooflessness. A home is not just physical space, but also has legal and social dimensions. A home provides roots, identity, sense of belonging and the emotional well-being. Homelessness is about the loss of all of this. It is isolating and destructive experience and homeless people are some of the most vulnerable and socially excluded in our society.
After years of downward trend, 2010 marks a turning point when all forms of homelessness began to increase. However, it is likely that homelessness will increase yet further, as the delayed effects of the economic crisis, cuts to the interests of residential and other reforms begin to bite all.
Homelessness describes the condition of people without a regular dwelling. People who are homeless are most often not able to acquire and maintain regular, safe housing, safe, and adequate, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence.The legal definition of" homeless "varies from country to country, or . among different entities or institutions in the same country or region [dubious - discuss]
The term homeless may also include people whose primary night-time living in a homeless shelter, central heating, a domestic violence shelter, cardboard boxes or ad hoc housing situation. American Government homeless enumeration studies also include persons who sleep in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
An estimated 100 million people worldwide are homeless in 2005. In western countries, mostly homeless men (75-80%), with single men are very overrepresented. In the United States, LGBT people are over-represented among homeless youth, at 40%.

AboutStreet Children In Indonesia

Street children are a term used to refer to children who live on the streets. They are lived in the streets for years. Street children describe children who live or work on the streets. Some of these children live with their families. Most children on the streets are between the ages of about 5 and 18 years old, may be increase of 18 years. Street children live in abandoned buildings, cardboard boxes, parks or on the street itself. Street children are those that are not taken care of by parents or other protective guardians. They are seeped in the streets. Street children spend some time in the streets and sleep in a house with ill-prepared adults. Street children exist in many major cities, especially in developing countries. Children of the street actually live on the street (or outside of a normal family environment). Family ties may exist but are tenuous and are maintained only casually or occur.

A 2007 survey by Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs estimated that 12 Cities in Java have over 250,000 homeless children. Jakarta alone is estimated to have over 30,000 homeless children on it’s streets.

    From parents who have moved away or abandoned their children

Who is helping them?


  •     Government agencies

  •     Homeless shelters

  •     Orphanages

  •     Outreach education programs

  •     Outreach health programs


Unfortunately, each of these agencies and projects is critically underfunded and cannot increase their capacity sufficiently to meet the scale of the problem. It’s clear that these children are amongst the most vulnerable in our communities. Our barefoot walks are for them and we hope others will take up the idea to raise money for these children.

Cases of Child Smoking in Indonesia

In the Western world there's been a huge crackdown on tobacco. Here in Australia of course, we're about to see the start of plain packaging. While big tobacco's market shrinks here and elsewhere, it's refocusing its sales efforts on developing countries like Indonesia. The result is a massive increase in smoking rates, including among children. Indonesia correspondent Matt Brown reports on the plight of one little boy who’s found it impossible to kick the habit.

A survey released in September this year, supported by World Health Organization and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found Indonesian men rank as the world's top smokers. Two-thirds of Indonesian males over 15 years old smoke.

The proportion of children who regularly smoke is rising. There's been a seven-fold increase in the number of young children smoking in less than a decade. And a quarter of Indonesian teenagers is a regular smoker.

Law enforcements are weak in Indonesia. There is no minimum age for buying cigarettes. And there is no education on the danger of smoking.

Indonesia is among a tiny handful of countries, which include North Korea and Zimbabwe, that has failed to sign the WHO's tobacco treaty.

The treaty restricts advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products and bans sales of cigarettes to minors.

In the code of ethics, there shouldn't be any tobacco ads within 100 m of school. But in reality, advertisements proliferating on billboards - which are plenty across the nation - portray smoking as a modern, hip activity that should be adopted by youngsters. 

"Children are supposed to go to school, study and play. Instead, they work in an industry which produces cigarettes. Then they start smoking themselves and see it as nothing out of the ordinary."
